Photo-Arts I+II

This blog reflects the main topic areas covered in Photo-Arts I+II, an introductory course offered by the Department of Art, University of Lethbridge, Alberta.

Participants learn about fundamentals: image formation, chemical and digital processes and, the nature of light and time as these act upon receptive surfaces. Key topics in the history and practice of the medium, from its inception until this day, are presented in weekly 'round-table' forums.

Students discuss outcomes, problems and questions they encounter while pursuing personal creative research. Examples from their work are shown on this blog.

Investigations include photomontage, designing and building optical toys and tools, producing cameraless photographs and exposing film in cameras--a sweeping vocabulary of possibilities related to photography.

Broadly, we consider the terms time and appearance as they relate to photography by examining the relationships that technical images have with the arts and to visual culture.
